ROCK and SHADOWS - STONE MOUNTAIN
I really don't know which version of this print I prefer. A black-and-white one has been hanging in my dining room for several months now, but as we do a little redecorating, a color version in a very nice frame is waiting in the wings for its chance to go up. Making the photographs in this immediate area at the base of Stone Mountain, North Carolina was a little challenging, not because of the massive expanse of stone, but because of the fallen leaves that covered much of the lower slope. I ended up using my tripod as a hiking staff to get up the lower part of the hill. Upon seeing some climbers who had just finished coming down on lines from the top use the technique when they got to my area, and having had a fall already, I emulated their technique and made part of the trip back down to more level ground sitting down by plan rather than by accident. This photograph is made on a 5mp almost-pocketable digital camera - my new print is actually 12 x 16, and holds up well but I think that is the limit. For another look at a similar area, see "Rock Path - Stone Mountain".
